Any business that survives and flourishes for four decades must be doing something right. Holder Pest & Termite Control certainly qualifies. The DeLand company, which also performs lawn services, marks its 40th anniversary in business June 1.
“We worked hard. We worked this territory for many years before starting our own company, so we knew a lot of people,” Jerry Holder told The Beacon.
Natalie Holder, Jerry’s wife, said their company is not like the corporate pest-control companies.
“It’s more of a local feeling, customer service-focused,” she said. “If somebody calls, they can talk to the owner. There are not so many levels of people to go through.”
Jerry said he got into the pest-control industry in 1969, working for one of those national companies. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a salesman.
“They gave me West Volusia because no one wanted it. They called it ‘Deadland,’” he said. “But it worked out good.”
Holder Pest & Termite Control was the result a few years later. After being in several different locations in its early years, the company took root in its current home at 466 S. Spring Garden Ave. around 1983.
The company has outlived its earliest customers, but still has many who have used its services for 25 or 30 years, the Holders said. In addition, some of its current staff of four employees have been around for more than 20 years, Natalie said.
Jerry Holder is licensed in all four categories of pest control — general household pests, lawn treatment, termites and fumigation, or tenting to eradicate drywood termites.
“Some companies are licensed for only one or two categories, but Jerry’s licensed in all four,” Natalie said. “We do all the typical pest-control services, but we also install and service sprinkler systems and install sod.”
Customers can sign up for quarterly or annual pest-control services, or every-other-month lawn service, Natalie said. Beacon readers who mention this article can get $40 off any annual service, she said.
Holder Pest Control is proud to support the local community.
“We love DeLand and support local vendors,” Natalie said. “We’re proud to have lived here a long time, and we’re happy to see DeLand growing.”
While the company often works in surrounding counties, its focus is Volusia County — and not just the west side. Holder Pest Control has customers all over the county, Natalie Holder said.
“Our goal is to be the best pest control and lawn services company in Volusia County,” she said.
