A car-sized sinkhole opened up on the Stetson University campus Monday morning.

The void is located on Stetson property behind the DeLand House Museum at 137 W. Michigan Ave. The sinkhole is located in an empty field and is not a threat to any other property at this time, university officials said.

Stetson students, faculty and staff, and the general public, are asked to avoid the sinkhole area, which is now encircled by orange fencing.

University officials said the hole is being monitored by DeLand city staff and the Stetson grounds crew. The hole is approximately 25-feet-by-18-feet wide at the surface, and 8 to 10 feet deep.

The hole will be watched for the next two days, and if it stabilizes, it could be filled in.
