The Spring Hill neighborhood in southwest DeLand is kicking off the third year of “Give Joy With a Toy,” a toy drive aimed at providing children with toys at the holidays.
The drive is committed to giving toys to children who live within 5 miles of the donation location. Organizers explained this assures that toys will go to families who may not have transportation to donation centers farther away.
The drive is getting a boost from members of Stetson University’s Bonner Program, a scholarship program that focuses on community service.
The drive is offering sponsorship packages at three levels: Sugar-Cookie, Gingerbread and Eggnog. The Resource Center is also seeking places to host donation boxes.
“No parent should have to choose between paying rent and buying a toy for their child,” Shilretha Dixon, head of the Spring Hill Resource Center, said.
Depending on donations, Dixon hopes to extend the drive outside the Spring Hill area.
Last year, 329 children were provided with two toys each.
“We can top that this year,” Dixon said.
