The West Volusia Branch NAACP will host the annual Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Memorial Luncheon 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at New Hope Baptist Church, 2855 Lake Helen Osteen Road in Deltona. Tickets cost $20.

The Moores, both educators, were killed in the bombing of their home in Mims on Christmas night 1951. The couple have been called the first martyrs during the early stage of the civil-rights movement.

The State of Florida has passed a resolution recognizing the third Saturday in December as “Harry Tyson Moore and Harriette Vyda Simms Moore Day.”

Guest speaker Sonya Mallard, cultural-center coordinator of the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park & Museum, believes in giving guests who visit the Moore Cultural Center more than just a walk down memory lane. She believes that the legacy of the Moores is such a vital missing piece to African-American history that it’s imperative to share the legacy with all.
