Basketball tournament comes to DeLand

The 2018 rendition of the Gus Gibbs DeLand Holiday Basketball Tournament returns to the DeLand High School gym Dec. 20-22. Each day of the tournament will find four games being played, at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. 

This year’s tournament will draw Calvary Christian of Daytona Beach, DME Sports Academy of Daytona Beach, Vanguard School of Lake Wales, Jacksonville Wolfson, Sebastian River of Fort Pierce, Celebration High School from the Orlando area, Saints Academy of Orlando and the DeLand Bulldogs. 

The DeLand Bulldogs will be matched with Saints Academy on the opening day of the tournament, with the game starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Bulldog gym. 

The opening game of the tournament will post Calvary against DME at 3 p.m., followed by Sebastian River facing Celebration at 4:30 p.m. The early-evening game at 6 p.m. will have Vanguard going up against Wolfson. 

The championship game will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, with third place being decided at 6 p.m. in the Bulldog gym. After each game on Saturday, All-Star selections will be announced from that particular game.

Born in Virginia, Al spent his youth in Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia, and first moved to DeLand in 1969. He graduated from Stetson University in 1971, and returned to West Volusia in 1985. Al began working for The Beacon as a stringer in 1999, contributing articles on county and municipal government and, when he left his job as the one-man news department at Radio Station WXVQ, began working at The Beacon full time.
