Shoestring Theatre cast members, some of our area’s finest actors, new and veteran, are busily rehearsing and perfecting New York and German accents for the upcoming production of Neil Simon’s Tony Award-winning play Lost in Yonkers, directed by Jenny Sejansky.
Set in 1942, Lost in Yonkers tells the story of two young brothers, Jay and Artie Kurnitz (played by Tyler Mattocks and Jackson Jones), who are left to contend with their tyrannical German grandmother (Sally Daykin), while their father, Eddie (Joe Veglica), reluctantly takes a job selling scrap metal around the country, attempting to pay off crippling debts. The relationship between the terrifying Grandma Kurnitz and her sweet but addled daughter Bella (Avalon Merut) is a balancing act between heartbreak and humor.
The cast is complete with the charmingly smarmy Uncle Louie (Scotty Leavitt) and Aunt Gert (Pam Turner), who give the boys the laughter they need, even if the source of the laughter is pain. On this journey through Yonkers, the brothers learn how hard life can be, but, how sweet it can be, as well.
Lost in Yonkers opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, and runs for two weekends. Show dates are Feb. 21-24, Feb. 28, and March 1-3. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. Sundays.
Tickets cost $18 for adults, $15 for senior citizens, and $10 for students. A special $3 discount is available for Thursday performances. Group rates are available for groups of 12 or more.
