In the 1970s, it was Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster; in the ’90s, on television, it was Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffmann; and in 2003, it was Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Now, a Freaky Friday for a new generation is onstage in the Volusia County premiere production at Gateway Center for the Arts in DeBary.
Under the direction of Jason Newkirk, with musical direction by Tiffany Demps and choreography by Corinne Wilson, the show is for certain to ring out to its fullest.
The new Freaky Friday, The Musical, based on the beloved 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, features a book by Bridget Carpenter, the co-executive producer and writer on the TV hits Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. Music and lyrics are by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of Next to Normal and If/Then.
When an overworked mother (played by Courtney Johnson) and her teenage daughter (Audrey Morales) magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, the two come to appreciate each other’s struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter. What a great message and joyful celebration Disney’s Freaky Friday, The Musical will bring to all.
Gateway Center for the Arts is at 880 North U.S. Highway 17-92 in DeBary.
