A DeLand woman surrendered 15 dogs to the city — including 12 puppies — after at least one the grown dogs attacked a man in the 800 block of South Thompson Street this morning, the DeLand Police Department reported.

The injured man was identified as 60-year-old DeLand resident Donald Bobble. He had multiple punctures to his right hand, knee and left ankle, and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to city officials.

The incident took place about 10:30 a.m.

After arranging to have Bobble taken to the hospital by ambulance, officers went to the home of May Martin at 409 ½ W. Beresford Ave., where it was determined the dogs lived.

According to the incident report, Martin told police “she has ‘Reindeer,’ a grey adult female pit bull, ‘Briskco,’ a grey adult male pit bull, and … ‘Bella,’ a juvenile grey female pit bull that live outside. Martin then said she has one other pit bull identified as ‘Ivory’ that lives inside.”

Martin told police, according to the report, that Reindeer and Briskco were the two dogs that were likely involved in the attack, while Bella would have followed the two others off the property but would not have been an aggressor because she is just a puppy.

The report also states that Martin said the dogs belong to her son, who is in prison, and that she can no longer take care of them. Police also reported that Martin said Reindeer had recently given birth under the house, but she was unsure how many puppies there were.

DeLand officers were able to get Briskco and Bella loaded onto a city animal-control truck, but Reindeer went under the house and refused to come out, the report states.

The officers backed off, while Martin coaxed the dog out and got her on a leash, according to the report. Reindeer was also loaded onto the truck.

Wildlife rehabilitation specialist Tom Scotti was called to the scene to help with the puppies, and 12 puppies were found underneath the home.

All the animals were transported to the city’s Second Chance Shelter, where they were given food and water, according to the report.

Martin was cited in the incident for allowing the dogs to run loose, not having them vaccinated, and not having them spayed or neutered.
