Bulldog sports get underway for 2019-20 season

The DeLand High School Bulldog football team under the direction of coach Steve Allen gets answer a lot of questions when the squad plays host to Wekiva in the annual Fall Classic Jamboree. Game time is 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium in DeLand.
 
The following week, Friday, Aug. 23, the Bulldogs travel to their official 2019 season-opener against Mainland at Daytona Stadium at 7 p.m.
 
The Bulldogs, this year, have been moved by the FHSAA to District 2-8A, along with Flagler Palm Coast, Ocala West Port, Sanford Seminole, Port Orange Spruce Creek and Orange City University. 
 
Football is not the only sport that will be starting its fall season this week. The Bulldog bowling teams under the direction of Garon Keuten open Monday, Aug. 19, against Mainland at 4:15 p.m. at Sunshine Bowling Center in DeLand.
 
The swim teams under the direction of Jeanne Jendrzejewski and Katie Kaye open at the Father Lopez meet at Cyprus Creek in Daytona at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.
 
Jim Lowenstein and Chris Madzik once again lead the cross-country squads, which travel to Bunnell for the Florida Palm Coast Spikes and Spurs Classic at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.
 
The Lady Bulldog volleyball teams, coached by Rhea Simon, go to Spruce Creek for jamboree action at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 15.
 
The DeLand boys’ golf team, coached by Roger Bismore, opens its season at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, against New Smyrna Beach at Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand. The girls’ golf team, under the direction of Chris Dowdell, plays New Smyrna Beach at New Smyrna Beach Municipal. 
 
The Bulldog football schedule has the team taking a week off Aug. 30, followed by a road trip to Jacksonville Mandarin Friday, Sept. 6. The following week, DeLand has its first home game of the official season hosting Sanford Seminole. The game will be a “Salute to Service.”
 
On Friday, Sept. 20, the Bulldogs play host to Deltona for the “Battle of the Bone,” followed Sept. 27 by hosting Spruce Creek for “Youth Night.” The Bulldogs then travel to Viera on the Space Coast Oct. 4 and the next week, Oct. 11, they go off to Ocala Forest.
 
Homecoming will be against University Oct. 18. On Oct. 25, the Bulldogs play host to the Bulldogs of Flagler Palm Coast followed by “Senior Night and Hall of Fame Game” Nov. 1 against Seabreeze.
