If all goes as planned, work on two Tivoli Drive intersections will begin shortly, and Deltona officials say the changes should improve traffic flow, especially during the morning and afternoon rush hours.
Tivoli’s intersections with Providence Boulevard and Saxon Boulevard will get new turn lanes to enable motorists on two-lane Tivoli to move more quickly through the crossings. Construction of the new turn lanes is scheduled to begin in the coming days.
Deltona has awarded a $1.6 million contract for the project to GPS Civil Construction, a Daytona Beach firm.
The River to Sea Transportation Planning Organization is covering two-thirds of the cost.
The intersection improvements are supposed to be an alternative to widening Tivoli Drive. A few years ago, the Deltona City Commission discussed three-laning Tivoli, to the chagrin of homeowners who feared they would lose large chunks of their front yards.
The additional turn lanes will result in a bigger crossing and wider pavement, but will not require taking the frontage of so many homes.
The average daily traffic count on Tivoli Drive is 11,218 vehicles, as measured in the second quarter of 2018, the latest data available.
