A Sanford-based company known for its healthful, cutting-edge snacks is expanding its production into DeBary.

Smart Baking Company is investing more than $1 million in renovations in a leased 50,000-square-foot space at 210 Springview Commerce Drive, where it will produce the company’s signature low-carb, gluten-free products.

When the facility opens, probably by summer 2020, Smart Baking Company will grow from 85 employees to as many as 125, company officials said in a news release.

“Central Florida is our home, and this new manufacturing facility helps us keep up with demand, while staying local,” Smart Baking Company CEO Harvey Heuvel said in the release. “We look forward to working with the city of DeBary and Volusia County as we develop new formulas for snacks that are healthy and taste good.”

The DeBary plant will be Smart Baking Company’s third location. The company’s headquarters and fulfillment center are in Sanford, and there’s another manufacturing plant in Seminole County, a company spokesperson told The Beacon.

While some of the administrative team may have offices in DeBary, the Sanford offices will remain, the spokesperson said.

Smart Baking Company, through what it claims is healthy baking, creates products that go beyond gluten-free, according to the news release.

Its Smartcakes and Smartbuns are made from a proprietary blend of fiber, protein, water, vitamins and minerals. They are gluten- and wheat-free, low-calorie, high-fiber, diabetic- and keto-friendly and non-GMO.

Smartcakes, which come in multiple flavors, are the only FDA-approved designation of “healthy cake,” the company said.

The company also offers Smartcakes PLUS Hemp CBD, which it says combine the benefits of Smartcakes with 25 milligrams of hemp-infused CBD per cake.

Smart Baking Company was founded by Netherlands native Heuvel and his family, who moved to the United States in 2002 and became restaurateurs.

As restaurateurs and fitness buffs, the Heuvels recognized the challenge of choosing between cravings and goals, so they decided to turn to science for solutions. Several years of research resulted in a proprietary blend of oat fiber, corn fiber, and flax and its leading-edge pharmaceutical process, another news release says.

Smart Baking products enjoy wide distribution via the internet, according to Heuvel.

“We have a particularly strong following among diabetics and those who are particular about ingredients in their food products,” he said. “We are also in 1,000 grocery and health-food stores. Our products have very high satisfaction ratings and are known for great taste. We are excited to expand our capabilities with our new location in Volusia County shortly after the first of the year.”

Along with the outlets nationwide, Smart Baking Company products are available at health-food stores in West Volusia. According to the company’s website, three West Volusia stores carry Smart Baking Company products: DeLand Natural Market & Deli, 933 N. Woodland Blvd.; Debbie’s Health Foods, 862 Saxon Blvd. in Orange City; and Nonna Maria’s Pizzeria, 34 N. Charles Richard Beall Blvd. in DeBary.

Smart Baking Company products are also available on Amazon and online at https://smartbakingco.com/. Smartcakes PLUS Hemp CBD are available at smartbakingCBD.com.
