After waiting four extra days because of Tropical Storm Nestor, the girls’ cross-country team from Ivy Hawn Charter School of the Arts in Lake Helen claimed the second-ever Volusia County Middle School Cross Country Championships at DeLand Middle School.
The Ivy Hawn girls scored 50 points to outdistance Creekside Middle School of Port Orange by 21 points.
Ormond Beach Middle took third with 93 points, followed by Hinson Middle, 107; Southwestern Middle of DeLand, 145; Deltona Middle, 151; River Springs Middle of Orange City, 186; New Smyrna Beach, 227; DeLand Middle, 231; Silver Sands of Port Orange, 233; Heritage Middle of Deltona, 241; Galaxy Middle of Deltona, 304; and Holly Hill Middle, 415.
The Ivy Hawn boys took second overall on the 2-mile course with 55 points, being just edged out by New Smyrna Beach’s 51 points. Creekside took third with 78 points, followed by River Springs, 102; Silver Sands, 111; Ormond Beach, 132; Southwestern, 187; Hinson, 192; Deltona, 292; DeLand, 296; Heritage, 302; Holly Hill, 357; and Galaxy, 389.
The Ivy Hawn girls averaged 14:25.23 per runner for the victory, while taking third, eighth, ninth, 11th and 19th places. Their top runner, Lana Magoc, toured the course in 13:38.89, while Veronica Meyer, Naomi Tibbetts, Morgan Northey and Adelle Schenaber were the other members scoring points. The top three of their runners made the All-Star team.
The top runner for all the girl runners was Skya Horth of New Smyrna Beach, with a time of 13:29.31.
The other top runners for the West Volusia schools included Olivia Litwiniec and Kylie Neira of Southwestern taking fifth and seventh, respectively, at 14:13.07 and 14:20.98, making All-Star status.
Deltona’s Dayanara Suarez was 13th at 14:42.20, with DeLand’s Alexandra Trenholm in 18th at 15:06.31.
Galaxy’s Amber East was 20th at 15:13.53, with River Springs’ Brylee Kamm coming to the finish line in 26th place at 15:33.63, and Heritage’s Katie Berrios ran the 2 miles in 16:05.79 in 38th place.
The boys’ teams were led to the finish line by New Smyrna Beach’s John Larson with a time of 12:04.07, with an average of almost six minutes per mile.
River Springs’ Corey Johnson was second overall with a clocking of 12:09.78, followed by Ivy Hawn’s Noah Ennabili at 12:17.01. New Smyrna Beach took places one, four, 13, 16 and 17, while Ivy Hawn placed third, sixth, 10th, 15th and 21st.
Ivy Hawn’s Jesshua Roldan was sixth at 12:43.37 and Jevanni Pomales was 10th at 13:09.27, making the All-Star team.
River Springs’ Johnson and James Langley made the All-Star team, with Langley running seventh at 12:55.25.
Southwestern’s Sajio Chowdbury was 22nd at 12:34.81, followed by Deltona’s Manuel Suarez in 29th at 13:56.15, Heritage’s Luke Wider with a time of 14:06.84 in 36th place, followed by DeLand’s Austin Reigel in 49th at 14:30.06, and Galaxy’s Tyler Locke in 58th at 15:08.15.
This event closed out the Volusia County middle-school cross-country season. The next middle-school event will be basketball, with a boys’ squad and girls’ squad starting in April 2020.
