Keeping the fight!

Althea Chavers, a staple in our community, has a grand level of affection for the Spring Hill community for all the goodness it has poured into her over the years.

Let it not be mistaken, “The Beautiful” Althea can be found daily embracing not only the families she comes across, but especially the children who enter the doors of the Lacey Family Spring Hill Boys & Girls Club.

With such a humble spirit, Chavers is known for helping others in various ways, feeding and clothing those in need, having a listening ear, and providing her unwavering engagement.

On Nov. 9, the community was able to show its support for Chavers and her causes by supporting the seventh annual Keeping the Fight Breast Cancer Walk.

“It was good to be a part of such an event for a great cause in our community,” community member Precious Hill said.

Chavers began this journey of providing a place and space for a breast-cancer walk in the community after not being able to attend one in another city more than seven years ago.

She continues to receive a positive response from West Volusia community members, along with the DeLand Fire Department and other agencies.

“I would like the community to know: Love is Action, Action is Love,” Chavers said.

Chavers, a breast-cancer survivor for more than 12 years, held the walk “rain or shine,” and the outpouring of support was exceptional.

Honor was given to Sabrina Brees, a past board president who lost her battle with cancer. Brees was also a very helpful and dedicated volunteer at the Lacey Family Spring Hill Club.

In addition to Chavers, survivors present included Joe Sullivan, Julie Hill, Alfreda Troupe, Charlita Williams, Helen Woulard, Elona Owens, Kamela Jackson and Yvonne Singleton.

“My motto of life is: If I can help somebody along the way, then my living is not in vain,” Chavers said.
