State Rep. Elizabeth Fetterhoff (R-DeLand) has filed a legislative bill to designate Interstate 95 in Florida the “Purple Heart Memorial Highway” to honor veterans who have died or been wounded in combat.

The bill, House Bill 433, directs the Florida Department of Transportation to install markers the length of I-95 to announce the new designation, Fetterhoff’s office said.

“Designating Florida’s I-95 as the ‘Purple Heart Memorial Highway’ is a remarkable way for our state to remember those men and women who have shown extraordinary service to our country,” Fetterhoff said in a news release from her office.

On Nov. 13, the bill got a favorable 12-0 vote from the Florida House of Representatives’ Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee.

If the bill is approved by the full Legislature, the new designation would go into effect next July 1.

The two-month 2020 legislative session starts in January.
