Pent-up national pride came to a head over the Independence Day weekend, as people all over West Volusia celebrated the United States of America’s birthday, not just for 2021, but for 2020 also, as most festivities last year were sidelined due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As normalcy returns, the sound of fireworks was inescapable.
Citywide events were coordinated all over the county, including firework displays in Orange City, Pierson and DeBary and a festivals in DeLand and Deltona, and a parade in Lake Helen.

What is a July Fourth celebration without music? The band known as Then2Now offers melodies to round out the holiday festivities. From left are Dino Balfour, Mickey Ilardi, Ronnie Sutton, Larry Hicks and Buddy Kays. Hicks, who lives in Deltona, founded Then2Now in 1996.

In what is probably the biggest such celebration in Deltona’s history, Dewey O. Boster Sports Complex became ground zero for the city’s July Fourth event. The holiday itself brought out perhaps as many as 2,500, and likely more, as young and old came for feasting, fun and fireworks. This was the first year Deltona brought a carnival to the celebration, and city officials say the carnival will probably become an annual part of future Independence Day festivities.

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND — In what may become an annual tradition, Deltona adds a carnival to its July Fourth celebration. The contractor for the amusements, Magic Midways, set up the rides at no cost to the city. In fact, the city is to receive 20 percent of the ride-ticket collections for the four-day run of the carnival. Next addition to the city's July 4 festivities may be a parade.

Lake Helen’s annual July Fourth parade brought out quite a crowd. From baton-twirlers to horseback-riders to the Butler Express, this parade featured some of the best that Lake Helen has to offer.

DeLand celebrated the Fourth of July with the city’s annual Firecracker Festival at Earl Brown Park. Music and other festivities rang in the evening, culminating in a fireworks display over the water.

Mike Weakley, dressed as Uncle Sam and presumably wearing stilts, was quite a sight at Earl Brown Park during DeLand’s Firecracker Festival.

After the fun of the pie-eating contest was over, contestant Hibai Iriondo let his dog, Doak, get in on the fun, too.
