West Volusia Artists Inc. are featuring their president, Judy Rowlett, as the Artist of the Month for September.

Rowlett likes artwork to tell a story. Her watercolor Days Gone By is a lovely representation of fall in the country. This piece will be on display at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center in DeLand during September.

Rowlett is a born-and-bred Floridian, and has lived in DeLand since 1971. She dabbled in art as a child, but only began taking classes in 2005. Some of her art teachers were Margaret Scribner, Helene Kereluk, Joe Sgarlata and Morris Weiner.

Retired from 32 years of teaching, Rowlett now spends time reading and walking, and enjoys lots of time with family and friends.

She joined West Volusia Artists in 2014 and has served as secretary, treasurer and, for five years, as president. Her advice for budding artists is to “purchase a sketchbook to carry with you and try to draw something every day.”

West Volusia Artists Inc. meet to draw, paint and socialize 9 a.m.-noon the first and third Fridays at the Sanborn Center, at 815 S. Alabama Ave. in DeLand.

The club will have its Fall Art Show and Sale 9 a.m.-noon Friday, Oct. 15, at the community center. For more information, call Rowlett at 386-738-5515.
