Editor, The Beacon:

Upon retirement, we spent the next two winters playing snowbirds in Florida. We quickly decided we needed to move here.

Concluding that Central Florida was the best area for us, we chose DeLand after falling in love with the Downtown.

When our Downtown was voted “America’s Best Downtown,” we knew we had made the right choice.

Today, we are saddened our leaders are siding with developers to turn DeLand into what Pete Seeger sang about in 1963 (in singer-songwriter Malvina Reynolds’ composition “Little Boxes”).

The first two verses go like this:

“Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky

Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same

There’s a pink one, and a green one, and a blue one, and a yellow one

And they’re all made out of ticky tacky

And they all look just the same … .”
