SPECIAL TO THE BEACON

The Music Ministry of First Presbyterian Church of DeLand announces a new ministry, a 2021-22 Sacred Music Concert Series. Under the direction of Music Minister Jane Christeson, the series will feature a variety of performers, both solo and ensemble. An array of accompanists will participate in creating both entertaining and edifying sacred music in various modes to enrich audiences.

The first event, “The Story of the Spirituals,” will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, in the church sanctuary. The concert will introduce listeners to this meaningful and historical body of work by presenting solo spirituals by several of the church’s student scholars, as well as a guest accompanist.

Jane Christeson, host of the concert, will supply historical and anecdotal notes on selections in this important sacred repertoire.

Featured vocal participants include Anna Brett Ruggiero, Nathan West, Justice Yates, Alexis Reese and Nidia Guevara-Nolesco, along with pianist Jacob Lytehaven.

On Sunday, Dec. 5, the sacred-music concert will be a Candlelight Evensong that will celebrate the Advent and Christmas seasons. The program will include the Chancel Choir and solo performers presenting a variety of sacred music, along with inspiring spiritual readings.

Due to COVID precautions, First Pres must limit and distance seating and require masks. Please call the church office at 386-734-6212 to reserve a place among the 100 seats.
