The American Legion commander (Jerry Brandt) of the Department of Florida — the highest office in the American Legion, overseeing all districts in Florida — spent the day before Veterans Day in Lake Helen, at American Legion Post 127.
“The commander is visiting all posts in District 17 on a fact-finding mission during his first term to see what he can do to assist,” American Legion District 17 Cmdr. Jim Bowers told The Beacon.
The meet-and-greet at Post 127, at 109 Cassadaga Road, was part of a week of Veterans Day events in Lake Helen, including a Nov. 6 “Saturday Supper for Our Veterans” at the Massey-James Youth Center, a ceremony at City Hall Nov. 11, and an official proclamation by the city at the City Commission’s Nov. 10 regular meeting.
