A Downtown staple for more than 15 years, DeLand Cyclery has moved to a new location at the corner of North Delaware Avenue and West Michigan Avenue in DeLand.
“I was originally just going to close the doors and find something else to do,” said owner Ted Beiler, “but a lot of people wanted me to stay open.”
Now only five blocks away from their previous location, DeLand Cyclery reopened their doors in July after closing their previous location due to limited inventory because of the coronavirus pandemic. “Supplies are still an issue,” said Ted, “but they are for most businesses, and will hopefully start picking up soon.”
DeLand Cyclery sells everything from vintage and classic bicycles to quality used bikes and accessories. “I have classic bikes from the mid-1930s on up,” said Ted. “We have some classic road bikes, old Schwinns, Raleighs, unique stuff like a hand built Japanese bike from the ‘80s; just a little bit of everything.”
In addition to selling bicycles, DeLand Cyclery is a full-service shop that offers bike and e-bike repairs, as well as pedicab services. “It’s a fun and unique form of transportation,” said Ted. “Mainly used during events, we have two pedicabs that we ride around to help transport people.”
The pedicabs are also available for chartered rides like weddings. “We’ll put a ‘Just Married’ sign on the back and string up cans for decoration,” said Ted. “It’s a lot of fun.”
A lifelong resident of DeLand, Ted has worked in the bike industry for more than 20 years. “I’m more of an old-school bike shop,” said Ted. “Back in the ‘70s I got my start by working at DeLand Cycle and Hobby Shop, and I also worked at Dave’s Cycle back in the day. I learned from good honest people: Offer quality work, and treat every bike like it’s my own.”
DeLand Cyclery is located at 360 W. Michigan Ave., Suite B1, in DeLand. Their pickup and drop-off hours are 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday, but they’re often open extended hours.
