Featuring a vibrant array of unique handmade items from Ecuador, Lo Nuestro Market in Deltona is the perfect place to shop for gifts this holiday season.
“The No. 1 thing we pride ourselves on is that you won’t find the same thing twice,” said owner Nancy Parra. “Everything is one of a kind.”
With an eclectic collection of items ranging from artwork, jewelry and bags to ponchos, peace pipes and hammocks, not only is everything at Lo Nuestro Market handmade by Nancy’s family in Ecuador, but everything is also organic.
“We use only items found in nature,” said Nancy. “For example, the dolls are made out of coconut hair and cornhusks, the blankets are made from alpaca wool, and the jewelry is made from orange peel, cantaloupe and pumpkin seeds. We paint feathers, create rosaries from rose petals, hand-paint napkin rings, and use fruits and vegetables for coloring.”
The reason behind their use of only natural materials is tradition. “Our ancestors would use only what the land would give,” said Nancy. “So we try to continue that tradition and only use what the land offers to us.”
Meaning “Our Market,” Lo Nuestro Market opened in May of this year, but was always a dream for Nancy and her family. “When I decided I wanted to open the store, I talked to my family about it in Ecuador, I told them this is my dream, and everybody helped me,” said Nancy. “One family member makes the wind chimes, another makes the tablecloths and dresses. For me, every time they send me the merchandise, it’s like Christmas, because I never know what I’m going to get.”
A family-run business, Nancy, her husband, Carlos, and children Eduardo and Emilia make each customer’s experience at the market an educational one. “When a customer comes in, I explain to them what everything is and the history behind each item,” said Nancy. “Because the goal is to not only sell items but to educate the community about Ecuadorian culture and history.”
Lo Nuestro Market is always offering sales and discounts on their merchandise, and is currently offering 5% off for active military and veterans, in honor of Nancy and Carlos’ son, who just started basic training.
Lo Nuestro Market is located at 1701 Doyle Road in Deltona. Store hours are 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and while usually closed on Sunday, for the holidays during the month of December they are open 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
