PHOTOS COURTESY STETSON UNIVERSITY STETSON WOMEN TRIUMPH — The Stetson University women’s basketball team defeated Furman, 67-58, with Ayanna Dublin (No. 12) scoring 18 points while grabbing six rebounds and handing out eight assists.

Friday, Dec. 17, marks the last day for teachers prior to the Winter Holiday, which starts Monday, Dec. 20. Students will not be in school Dec. 17, which also marks the end of the second grading period. Teachers and students return to the classroom Tuesday, Jan. 4.

DeLand High School

This is an early announcement for DeLand High School’s Bulldog Palooza, which will take place 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10.

Bulldog Palooza offers parents and students a chance to see what DeLand High has to offer. Attendees will tour the campus, learn about electives, and meet teams and clubs. For more information, visit delandhs.org.

DeLand High School athletics

The DeLand High School Lady Bulldog weightlifters had a meet with Orange City University High School and gained two first-place finishes, three seconds and three thirds. Jendaya Talton won the 129-pound class, and Azariyah Hagins earned first place in the unlimited class.

Jada Salters, Addison Ruocco and Amiya Lewicki earned seconds in the meet, while Rian Anderson, Zachiyah Banton-Dofflemyer and Leah Jensen finished in third place.

The DeLand boys’ basketball team defeated Excel Christian Academy, 83-26, and also topped Oviedo, 71-56, with senior Welsey Snipes scoring 15 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Trayvon Barbary also scored 15 points, Joseph Martinez dropped in 11 baskets, with four steals, and sophomore Lucas Velez also scored 11 points. The Bulldogs were stopped by Rockledge, 63-57.

The DeLand girls’ soccer team lost to Merritt Island, 2-1, defeated Flagler Palm Coast, 2-1, and was topped by Hagerty, 2-1.

The DeLand boys’ soccer team stopped Oviedo, 3-2, while knotting the score with Lake Mary, 2-2.

The Lady Bulldog basketball team was defeated by Forest Lake Academy, 56-15.

The Bulldog sports calendar really thins out with the Winter Holiday. On Friday, Dec. 17, the boys’ basketball team plays at Seabreeze at 7:30 p.m., and the wrestling team goes to the Hagerty Tournament in Oviedo through Saturday, Dec. 18.

Stetson University Lady Hatter basketball player Tatiana Streun has been selected as the ASUN Newcomer of the Week.

Football players Ethan Hull and Nolan DeFranco have been named to the 29th annual Academic All-PFL Team for 2021.

     

HONORED STUDENT-ATHLETES — Stetson University football players Ethan Hull (No. 47) and Nolan DeFranco (No. 97) have been named to the 29th annual Academic All-PFL Team for 2021.The Stetson women’s basketball team defeated Furman, 67-58, with Ayanna Dublin scoring 18 points while grabbing six rebounds and handing out eight assists. Teammate Yazz Wazeerud-Din scored 17 points.

The Hatter men’s basketball team recently played two games in South Florida. Florida Atlantic defeated the Hats, 83-73, with Chase Johnston scoring 18 points, along with Mahamadou Diawara, who also pulled down six rebounds, while Rob Perry added 15 points.

The Hatters then moved farther south to face Florida International, who handed the Hats a 72-65 defeat. Diawara scored 12 points with seven rebounds, with Alvin Tumblin and Christiaan Jones each getting 10 points.

During the Dec. 17 weekend, the Lady Hatter Classic Tournament takes place in the Edmunds Center on the Stetson campus. At 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, the Lady Hats face Virginia Commonwealth University, and they face Tennessee State at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 19. Other games will be played by other teams in the tournament.

On Monday, Dec. 20, the men’s basketball team heads to the University of Miami, with game time to be announced. On Wednesday, Dec. 22, the men play host to Piedmont at 2 p.m.
