We don’t have a map

Editor, The Beacon:

The Bible is not the Word of God.

I don’t have a single iota of doubt or hesitation about making that assertion. It’s easy. The Truth is comforting as much as it can be painful. That is the paradox. That is life.

From the dawning of the human ability to think in the abstract, dating back exactly who-knows-how-many years, we have struggled with the single most prevalent question of all human history: Why?

Is there a reason for “reason”? What is the purpose? How is it even possible I can be aware of myself asking that question? What does it all mean?

We don’t know.

The only thing we do know is “You Are Here” and we don’t have a map.

There are some people that will tell you that the Bible is a map. That is simply not true.

Maps show clear routes. The Bible does not show a clear route.

There are those who will argue that it is only “clear” to the “faithful.” That is where the dung heap starts to grow.

The world is bad by objective standards; we shouldn’t make it worse by closing our eyes and praying for deliverance by an imaginary all-powerful fairy for adults.
