The Stetson University baseball and softball teams have announced their 2022 season schedules. The Lady Hatter softball team opens its season Friday, Feb. 11, and the Hatter baseball team opens Friday, Feb. 18.

The Lady Hatter softball team opens with the three-day Stetson Lead-Off Classic, which begins Friday, Feb. 11, when Georgia State, Delaware and Indiana State come to town. On Feb. 11, the Lady Hatters face Georgia State at 3 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. game with Delaware. The next day, Saturday, Feb. 12, Stetson plays Delaware at 3 p.m. and Indiana State at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 13, game time is noon, when the Lady Hatters play against Georgia State.

The Lady Hats travel to Leesburg for The Spring Games, in which Stetson will face Maryland, Ohio State, North Carolina, Monmouth and Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 18 through Feb. 20.

They play host to the University of Florida on Wednesday, March 16, and the ASUN Conference schedule opens Saturday, March 19.

The baseball team begins with the Hatter Classic, which this year will feature Delaware, Notre Dame, Manhattan and the Hats. Opening day, Feb. 18, will have the Hats facing Delaware at 3 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. with Notre Dame and Manhattan taking the field. The next day, Feb. 19, has Manhattan and Delaware playing at noon, followed by Stetson facing Notre Dame at 4 p.m. The final day of the Classic, Sunday, Feb. 20, has Delaware and Notre Dame playing at 9:30 a.m., with the Hatters taking on Manhattan at 1 p.m.

The Hatters play host to the University of Florida at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, and Florida State on Tuesday, May 3.

Some of the other highlights at Melching Field include a two-game series with Maine in March and a meeting with South Florida in May. The ASUN conference schedule begins Friday, March 18, with a three-day series with Florida Gulf Coast University in DeLand.

The Hatter ticket office is located in the Edmunds Center, at 143 E. Pennsylvania Ave. The hours for getting tickets are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The ticket office can be emailed at HatterTickers@Stetson.edu or called at 386-738-HATS (4287).

High-school students interested in working as camp counselors or camp staff members can apply to the Florida Elks Youth Camp for summer employment. The camp has campers ages 9 to 13 years, from June 5 to July 30.

Meals and lodging are provided at no cost, and each cabin has air conditioning, hot water and bathroom facilities.

College scholarships are available.

DeLand High School athletics

The 2021 Gus Gibbs Memorial Holiday Basketball Tournament took place on the DeLand High School basketball floor during the Winter Holiday. Calvary Christian, Orange City University, Mount Dora, Leesburg, Satellite Beach, Jacksonville Creekside, Saints Academy of Orlando, and DeLand participated. The championship game between Leesburg and Satellite Beach went into overtime when the score was knotted at 52 at the end of regulation play. In overtime, Leesburg pulled out to a final score of 56-54 for the tournament title.

DeLand won two games, while losing one, to take third place in the tourney. DeLand defeated Saints Academy and Calvary Christian but lost to Satellite Beach 60-49.

Orange City University lost their opening game to Calvary Christian 64-53, then defeated Mount Dora 56-37, but lost their third game to Creekside 67-32.

The DeLand High School Bulldog sports calendar has the wrestlers going to the Viper Classic at Space Coast High School on Saturday, Jan. 15.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Lady Bulldog soccer team will host Eustis at 7 p.m., while the girls’ basketball team plays Ocoee at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. that same day.

The DeLand girls’ weightlifting team enters the FHSAA District tournament at Flagler Palm Coast at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19. The boys’ soccer team greets Seabreeze at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. that same day, and the girls’ soccer team heads to The Villages at 7 p.m. that day.

On Thursday, Jan. 20, the Lady Bulldog basketball team plays at Forest Lake at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The boys’ basketball team plays Orange City University at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21.

And on Saturday, Jan. 22, the wrestling team travels to Celebration for a tournament.

Stetson University Athletics

The Stetson University Hatter men’s basketball team recently defeated Point University of Georgia, 77-65. Rob Perry scored 22 points for the Hatters while gathering in seven rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots. Mahamadou Diawara collected 15 points while gathering in 17 rebounds. Chase Johnston was the third Hatter in double points with 12.

On Saturday, Jan. 15, the Hatter basketball teams host Kennesaw State in the Edmunds Center. The women play at 1 p.m., and the men compete at 4 p.m.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Hatter men play host to Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. The next day, the Lady Hats face the same team at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Jan. 22, both the men and women will be at North Alabama, with the women playing at 2 p.m. and the men at 4:30 p.m.

College honors

Steven Smith, of Deltona, has earned a Master of Science in Justice Administration from University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

Allyson Murdock, of DeBary, has been named to the fall 2021 semester dean’s list at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus.

Eric Hartless, of DeLand, has been named to the fall 2021 semester dean’s list at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee. Hartless is majoring in finance/accounting.
