Citing low demand for tests, Family Health Source shuttered the COVID-19 testing site at the Volusia County Fairgrounds Feb. 8.

The site first began offering rapid COVID-19 tests in January as COVID-19 cases were on the rise. As the surge of cases triggered by the omicron variant of the virus continues to wane, the testing site is ceasing operations.

Since opening, Family Health Source administered 3,084 COVID-19 tests and gave away more than 8,000 at-home rapid tests.

Locally and statewide, COVID-19 cases have been on the decline since mid-January. During the week of Jan. 28 through Feb. 3, Volusia County reported 3,378 new cases of the virus, according to data from the Florida Department of Health. That’s down from a January peak of 7,465 new cases.

While cases are declining, reported deaths associated with the virus have steadily risen in recent weeks. From Jan.  28 through Feb. 3, the Florida Department of Health reported a total of 1,324 new deaths due to COVID-19, an increase from 1,192 deaths reported from the week before.
