Originally from Palatka, Alfred (AJ) got his start in the mortuary business by working in a cemetery for E.W. Lawson & Sons Funeral Home when he was just 16 years old. From there, he worked at several funeral homes in and around the Palatka area until he moved to Volusia County in 1999.
His passion for mortuary service led him to become a director’s assistant at Unity Funeral Home in DeLand for 19 years.
In 2016, Alfred became Vice president/director of operations at People’s Funeral Home in Sanford for seven years until he got a call from Clifford A. Marchbank Jr., “the funeral director at the place I’m standing in now,” said Alfred (AJ). Clifford stated, “Alfred, I’ve watched you for a long time. I’m at the point I’m unable to run this place anymore, but I know you can.” In July 2021, after the passing of Clifford A. Marchbank Jr., Alfred (AJ) started transitioning to the new business.
The business was formerly known as A. C. Marchbank Family Funeral Home, but Alfred (AJ) established People’s Choice Mortuary and Cremation Service LLC and opened as the owner under the new name on Nov. 1, 2021.
