The West Volusia Artists are highlighting Judy Bergado as their Artist of the Month for May. Her acrylic piece is titled Hunter’s Aquarium, because her 5-year-old great-grandson requested a painting of fish. He proceeded to make an extensive list from which she tried to comply.
Originally from New York, Bergado then moved to New Jersey. After retiring, she and her husband moved to Florida in 2015. Before retiring, she enjoyed making jewelry, and participated in craft shows in New Jersey.
After settling in Florida, Bergado realized she wanted to pursue more art. She had always liked the feel of paintbrushes and decided to explore some painting classes. Hobby Lobby was the starting point. From there, she found the internet, which offered mixed-media courses that “opened a whole new world to me,” she said.
In addition to painting and making jewelry, Bergado enjoys needlepoint and making baskets from pine cones. She is willing to try anything new that is interesting and different, and encourages everyone to challenge themselves, even if you’re uncomfortable with it.
“Just give it a try, you might like it,” Bergado said.
Bergado originally joined the Deltona Art Club and became their treasurer. Then COVID affected their get-togethers. So after seeing a posting about the West Volusia Artists in the monthly activities calendar at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center in DeLand, she contacted club President Judy Rowlett, who shared all about the club. Bergado happily joined.
The West Volusia Artists meet 9 a.m.-noon on the first and third Fridays of the month at the Sanborn Center, 815 S. Alabama Ave. in DeLand. The club welcomes artists of different mediums and levels of talent. You’re encouraged to bring your art materials and join in.
