An ordinance to change Pierson’s longtime regulations prohibiting the sale of alcohol on Sundays passed on first reading June 14.
The Northwest Volusia town currently bans the sale of alcoholic beverages from midnight to 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and all day on Sunday. If it passes on second reading, the town will allow alcohol to be sold on Sundays beginning at 12:01 p.m.
The ordinance passed on a 3-1 vote with very little discussion among Town Council members. Town Council Members Sergia Cardenas, Robert F. Greenlund and D. Gray Leonhard voted in favor of the ordinance, while Mayor Samuel G.S. Bennett voted against.
The ordinance is expected to return for a second reading at the next Town Council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28. If it passes on second reading, the ordinance will go into effect immediately.
Pierson Town Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month in the current Pierson Town Hall, 106 N. Center St. Once the town finishes fixing up its new Town Center at 116 W. First Ave., meetings will move there.
