Spiritual Side: 1st Christian Church hosts guest minister on July 24

The Rev. Dr. Fernando Morales is the guest minister for First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of DeLand at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday, July 24, service. The Rev. Morales and Olga Palmer will administer Communion to all believers as part of the service.

Nancy Jones and Sue Brague welcome guests and members with coffee and pastries prior to the service.

Mark Bose will provide music for the worship service, and Kathy Porr will give the welcome and the announcements.

Bingo is at 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, with all welcome in the fellowship hall.

The Disciple Women are continuing their cleanup at 1 p.m. Mondays. At 3:30 p.m., some of the women will gather for prayer in the library.

Arianna Dutton and Shayla Kopsa are showing movies in the fellowship hall area at 2 p.m. each Wednesday until school starts. Call the church office at 386-734-0677 for reservations.

‘Not a Twinkie God’

It has been said, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Members and friends of First United Methodist Church of DeLand also believe that “Man cannot live by bread alone.” He must also have access to the words of God’s truths. This week in the sermon series “The Land Between,” the topic will be “Not a Twinkie God.”

Andy Rooney asked this thought-provoking question: “Would a real man get caught eating a Twinkie?” Twinkies are not noted for having any nutritional value or dietary merits, but they are a gastronomic indulgence that many like to partake of on rare occasions.

When we look to God’s provision for our physical and spiritual nutrition, we can count on Him giving us what we need to bring the balance and good health that are needed for our minds, bodies and souls. You’re encouraged to consider attending First United Methodist on Sunday, July 24, for one of the services as everyone nibbles on this topic.

In-person traditional worship services are at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the sanctuary, and an in-person contemporary worship service is at 9:30 a.m. in the Family Life Center. All three services are streamed live on Facebook on the First Church DeLand page, or they can be accessed through the website at Firstchurchdeland.org.

Contact the office for additional information at 386-734-5113.

Activities at First Pres

On Sunday, July 24, Pastor Michael Bodger of First Presbyterian Church of DeLand will engage listeners in the significant Scripture of Luke 11:1-13. The sermon theme will declare “… How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

A disciple asks Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Jesus provides the foundational prayer for all generations, beginning with, “Our Father, hallowed be your name …” Although biblical translations vary in verbiage, this thoughtful prayer has remained an essence of Christian prayer life. Jesus then assures the disciple that, “For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Pastor Bodger will share this message with those attending in person at the 8 a.m., 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. services. You can also view it by livestreaming or, later, by recording.

God’s Bathhouse will begin at 9 a.m. this Saturday, July 23, near the church pavilion. People will receive fresh clothing, hygiene kits, a shower and fellowship for two hours. Anyone who needs this assistance is welcome.

On Wednesday, July 27, First Pres will host its “Cookout Conversation” in the pavilion. Friends and neighbors are invited to join members in a casual meal of hot dogs, hamburgers and the fixings, along with water and conversation. Anyone attending can bring a dish to share with others but should plan to take home leftovers and serving dishes. This fellowship time begins at 5:30 p.m.

Upcoming important events include the start, in late August, of the two-year Bethel Bible Study; and the planning for Presbyterian Women of a new women’s Bible study, Strength Will Rise, 10 a.m.-noon Mondays beginning Aug. 22.

Grace

You’re encouraged to journey into the wilderness online with Mosaic Unitarian Universalist Congregation this summer for the 2022 Summer Sharing Series based upon exploring the “Inward Journey,” from Jan Phillips’ Visionary Thought Series.

This summer, Mosaic UU is exploring the integration of mind, body and spirit

These services are designed to allow participants to share their thoughts if they choose to do so. Sharing is always voluntary; active listening is welcome too.

This Sunday, July 24, Mosaic’s roundtable-style service will continue, with facilitator Helen Scott guiding everyone through a discussion about grace. Grace is the outward manifestation of the soul’s harmony and peacefulness.

The reflection question for this Sunday will be: How do you maintain your inner harmony and peacefulness so that your life is grace-filled? All are welcome.

For more information on Mosaic, see the website at mosaicuuc.org. For instructions on how to join the virtual service, email to mosaicuuc@gmail.com.
