Looking to become a voice for her community, Deirdre Perry is running to become DeLand’s next Seat 3 city commissioner.
“A lot of people feel that their voices aren’t heard and no one is listening,” said Perry. “I want to take on this seat so that I can bring those thoughts and concerns of our community back to the City Commission, and let them know how the community feels about the changes DeLand is going through.”
Born and raised in DeLand, Deirdre Perry has seen this city through its many phases and changes, but is ready to be part of the ones ahead. “I have observed the opportunities and challenges our community is facing,” said Perry, “which inspired me to be a part of a new leadership.”
One of those major challenges currently facing DeLand is the rapid pace at which the city is growing. “A lot of people are really concerned about how quickly DeLand is growing,” said Perry, “and aren’t happy with the mass development. I think it’s important that the people of DeLand understand why this growth is happening and how they could possibly benefit from it. I also think it’s important that this development includes affordable housing.”
Being from DeLand, most of Deirdre’s background and experience come from her DeLand education, community service and church. A member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Deirdre is the choir president, is in charge of the youth department, is a member of the Sunday school, and is a yearly participant in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Choir. Outside of church ,Deirdre participates in the Catalyst Mentorship Program, and has an MBA in Human Resources from Strayer University.
The youngest of seven, Deirdre comes from a large family and now has a large family of her own. Deirdre and her husband, Kevin Perry, a Marine Corps veteran, have been blessed with 5 children and 5 grandchildren, with another grandchild on the way.
Deirdre is a people person, who prioritizes honesty and transparency and is a candidate that the DeLand community can trust. “I feel that my demeanor when handling situations is something people can trust about me and know that when I do something or say something it’s going to be in their best interest,” said Perry.
