Classes for Volusia County public schools start Monday, Aug. 15. The first grading period will end Friday, Oct. 14. Grades will be on the Parent Portal, and report-card distribution will be Monday, Oct. 24.

School hours

Elementary-school hours (grades K-5) are 7:50 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. on regular days, and on early-release days, the hours are 7:50 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Starke Elementary in DeLand is an Elementary Plus One school, and its hours on regular days are 7:50 a.m.-3 p.m., and on early-release days 7:50 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Middle schools (grades 6-8) have regular hours of 9:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m., while on early-release days, the hours are 9:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

High-school (grades 9-12) regular hours are 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., and early-release hours are 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Taylor Middle-High in Pierson (grades 6-12) is a combination school, with regular hours of 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., while early-release hours are 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Highbanks Learning Center (grades 6-12) is an alternative education center, with regular hours of 8 a.m.-2 p.m., and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on early-release days.

DeBary Parks and Recreation

DeBary Parks and Recreation has announced their fall 2022 community recreation programs, with activities for children and adults. DeBary residents, along with nonresidents, are invited to join, but space is limited.

Registration is online at debaryrecreation.org or in person at DeBary City Hall. Birth certificates are required for all new participants. The fall programs include youth soccer, adult kickball, youth tumbling and Little Ballers Sports Clinic.

Youth Soccer League registration costs $75 per child, and concludes Friday, Aug. 26. This program is for kindergartners through ninth-graders, with age-group divisions. Competition will be Sept. 8 through Nov. 18.

Adult Kickball registration costs $350 per team (with 10-14 players), and ends Monday, Aug. 22. Competition will be Sept. 9 through Nov. 11.

Youth Tumbling registration runs Monday, Aug. 15, through Friday, Sept. 9. The program will be Sept. 19 through Nov. 9. Tumbling for 3- to 5-year-olds will be Monday evenings, with parent participation required, and a cost of $30 per child. Six- to 12-year-olds will meet Wednesday evenings, with a cost of $60 per child.

Little Ballers Sports Clinic registration runs Monday, Aug. 15, through Friday, Sept. 9. The program, which is for 3- to 5-year-olds, will be Sept. 27 through Nov. 8. The cost is $30 per child for six lessons. Little Kickers Youth Soccer will be Tuesday evenings, and Little All Stars Intro to Youth Sports will be Thursday evenings.

DeLand High School

A Legacy Brick Campaign is taking place at DeLand High School. You can help support the school by leaving an imprinted brick of your legacy or honoring someone. The brick will be installed at either the gym entrance or the main entrance to the campus.

Taylor Middle-High School

Taylor Middle-High School in Pierson is offering a Wildcat All-Sports Pass for 2022-23. The pass entitles the holder to attend any regular-season home sporting event. It may not be used for multiple entrances and is nontransferable.

The pass for a parent costs $75, and a student pass costs $60.

Stetson University Athletics

The Stetson University women’s basketball team has added Liberty Del Rosario to the program as an assistant coach. Last season, she served as an assistant at Barry University in Miami Springs.

Brooke Fogarty also has been added to the Lady Hatter basketball program as director of basketball operations. Last season, she served as a student manager for the basketball program at The University of Alabama.

Many people who have driven past Melching Field have wondered what’s going on there. It’s renovation of the facility, a joint venture between Stetson University and the City of DeLand.

College honors

Nicholas Spanos, of DeBary, recently graduated from Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, with a Bachelor of Science in computer and digital forensics. He also was named to the dean’s list during his last semester.

Morgan Hekkel, of Deltona, recently graduated with an MBA from Missouri State University in Springfield.

Harry Wolfe, of Deltona, has earned an MBA in business management and human resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business.

Herbert Race, of DeLand, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Jarrett Bourque, of DeLand, has been accepted into the Doctor of Chiropractic degree program for the summer 2022 quarter at Palmer College of Chiropractic’s Florida Campus in Port Orange.

Nicholas Christiano, of Deltona, has been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
