Come Friday, Aug. 19, the Volusia County Property Appraiser’s Office will mail preliminary tax notices to owners of homes, lands, businesses and even tax-exempt properties such as churches and other nonprofit organizations.

More than 348,000 TRIM notices will be sent to the property owners. TRIM is an acronym for Truth in Millage.

The TRIM notices give property owners an idea of what local governments and special taxing authorities may charge. The tax rates shown on the notices are maximum rates that may be lowered during the final budget deliberations in September. The mailings also show the times, dates and locations of the taxing agencies’ public hearings on budgets and levies so that property owners may voice their sentiments on spending and taxation.

Actual tax bills will be mailed to property owners in late October or early November.
