West Volusia high-school football
During the official opening week for high-school football, two West Volusia teams were victorious, while the other four went down to defeat.
Deltona High downed Winter Springs, 69-0, scoring 28 points in the first quarter. Pierson Taylor Middle- High stopped Winter Park Trinity Prep, 30-0.
DeLand lost to Mainland, 42-29, with the score locked at 21 at halftime. Deltona Trinity Christian Academy lost to Daytona Beach Halifax Academy, 26-18.
Pine Ridge of Deltona was shut out by Matanzas, 42- 0. Orange City University was shut out by Oviedo Hagerty, 28-0.

These are this week’s games, all on Friday, Sept. 9: DeLand will go to Lake City Columbia; Deltona heads over to Matanzas; Orange City University will host Seabreeze; Pierson Taylor greets Cocoa Beach; and Pine Ridge of Deltona goes to St. Augustine Menendez. All games are at 7 p.m., but confirm these times and dates before traveling, as schedules do change.
On Friday, Sept. 16, Deltona greets Atlantic; Pine Ridge of Deltona plays host to Orange City University; Pierson Taylor welcomes Bell; and Deltona Trinity Christian hosts Lecanto Seven Rivers Christian.
DeLand High School Athletics
The DeLand High School swimmers opened their 2022 season with a dual win over Matanzas. The Bulldog boys won, 137-31, and the Lady Bulldogs downed their opponents, 136-56.
The DeLand High cross-country teams opened their season at the Flagler Palm Coast Invitational. The DeLand boys took 10th out of 18 teams. Riley Garrison was the top DeLand runner, placing 31st out of 300, with a 19:02.0 time for the 5K course.
Sydney Neira led the DeLand girls by finishing eighth overall, with a 21:59.8 timing, while the team finished eighth out of 18 teams competing.
The DeLand High sports calendar finds the cross-country team competing in the New Smyrna Beach meet at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.
On Monday, Sept. 12, the DeLand bowlers greet Spruce Creek at 3:45 p.m.; the DeLand girls’ golf team plays Spruce Creek at 4 p.m.; and the DeLand volleyball teams play host to Sanford Seminole at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the swimmers greet Mainland and Atlantic at 4 p.m., and the volleyball teams go to Orlando Timber Creek to compete at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the DeLand bowlers head to Matanzas for a 3:45 p.m. match.
On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the Bulldog boys golf team hosts Father Lopez and Lake Howell at 4:30 p.m., followed by the DeLand boys playing against Eustis on the Black Bear Golf Course at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.
On Thursday, Sept. 15, the DeLand volleyball team has matches in Winter Park at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and, that same day, the Bulldog junior-varsity football team has a game against Spruce Creek at 6 p.m.
Stetson University Athletics
The Stetson University Hatter men’s soccer team opened this year’s season with a knotted score of zero against Wright State University. The Stetson women’s soccer team lost for the first time to the University of Florida, 3-0.
The Lady Hatter volleyball team opened the 2022 season with a tournament win at the Battle in the Boro at Georgia Southern, with a 3-0 mark. They opened with a three-match score, with the host school winning, 26-24, 25-20 and 25-9. The second day of the tourney found Stetson downing the University of South Carolina – Upstate, 3-0, with scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-16. Finally, in the last game, Stetson defeated Alcorn State, 3-0, with scores of 25- 13, 25-17 and 25-12.
The Hatter football team plays host to Louisiana Christian at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.
The Stetson home schedule for other sports has the Stetson volleyball team hosting the Stetson Volleyball Invitational Tournament Sept. 10. They play Bethune- Cookman at 12:30 p.m. in the Edmunds Center, followed by facing Mercer at 6 p.m. Other games will be taking place throughout the day.
The Lady Hatter soccer team greets Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.
College honors
DeLand High School student Ai Hancock, who is dual-enrolled at Daytona State College, is one of 207 Phi Theta Kappa members nationwide who have been named 2022 Coca- Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars.
