Volunteers Alesha Ortiz, Omayra Roman and Josue Padilla strike a pose during their work to help others in need. They volunteered at a food giveaway in the days before Hurricane Ian, hosted by Centro Internacional de la Familia de Deltona.

In the days before Hurricane Ian assaulted Volusia County and other locales in Florida, churches in Deltona came together to combat the want of something to eat.

Centro Internacional de la Familia de Deltona was the site of a drive-up food distribution. The church is at 2886 Elkcam Blvd., formerly the house of worship of Deltona Lakes Baptist Church.

In all, volunteers from the Nitty Gritty True Talk Ministry and other groups handed out fresh and canned foods, bread, bottled water and other essentials to people in 285 cars.

Many people had to be turned away, simply because the supply of food was exhausted within less than 1 1/2 hours.

As in other previous food giveaways, some people showed up before dawn to secure a place in line and the opportunity to save on their household grocery bills.
