DONORS — George and Peggy Sherman look over parts of the train set they donated to the City of DeLand.

Thanks to DeLandites George and Peggy Sherman, DeLand’s Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center has a new, festive piece of décor: a holiday-themed model train set.

George Sherman is the conductor and model train collector of the family. He said the locomotives bring back lots of fond memories.

“When I was a boy, my grandfather had one,” he said. “I used to be amazed at it, and I just started collecting.”

The Shermans moved to DeLand in 2006 after visiting in 2005 and falling in love with the city. Since then, the two have been regular visitors to events at the Sanborn Center.

CONDUCTOR GEORGE — Model train conductor George Sherman shows Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center staff the ropes when it comes to conducting his train. To get the set up in time for the holidays, center staff set as much of the set as they could fit on a baby grand piano.

Center Director Jennifer Wilder said they’re some of her favorite guests.

“They are just wonderful, wonderful people,” she said. “I’ve been doing this job and, for the most part, I enjoy everyone who comes in here, but those are two who have kind of stolen my heart.”

The Shermans’ donated train set is partially on display now at the Sanborn Center, 815 S. Alabama Ave. in DeLand, and next year Wilder hopes to have more space to set up the entire set the couple donated.
