Editor, The Beacon:
I’m appalled by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ whitewashing of African American history. I’m a retired white professor who created PowerPoint lectures with photos of Black men hanging from trees, burning on KKK crosses, and marching in civil rights protests while being attacked by dogs.
My courses included plenty of charts and graphs comparing Black and white incomes, wealth, incarceration rates, life expectancy, and infant and maternal mortality rates.
I understand why white racists want to hide our past treatment of racial and ethnic minorities. Treatment was exceptionally harsh here in Florida.
DeSantis has me thinking I should take an adjunct position to teach those things again. We need thousands of professors and teachers at all levels teaching the truth, not whitewashing it.
