Crews are hard at work trying to determine the source fo the fire in the Wells Fargo building at 131 E. New York Ave. on Feb. 15.

Update, 8:30 p.m., Feb. 15: 

East New York Avenue is now open to traffic.


The DeLand Fire Department and Volusia Fire Services were on the scene at the Wells Fargo building 131 E. New York Ave. in Downtown DeLand to respond to a fire around 5:35 p.m. today, Feb. 15.

East New York Avenue and East Indiana Avenue is closed at Alabama Avenue and Woodland Boulevard.

Pat Dunn was alone in the building, working in his office on the second floor, when the fire broke out.

“I noticed the smell, like an electrical smell, and then it started getting stronger,” he told The Beacon an hour later, from behind the police tape on the sidewalk outside. “I knew I had to get out because there was black smoke coming out of the air duct.”

Firefighters broke out windows on the second floor of the building.

As of 7 p.m., authorities had yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.
