Editor, The Beacon:
Shocked by the news that Volusia County Schools’ books must be approved by a “school media specialist,” and knowing all books must be “suited to students’ needs,” I went to read some of the books that have been removed “for content.”
Unfortunately, in my city Seattle’s library system, many of these books had waiting lists of up to 150 people. I was able to get and read two of the removed books: The Nowhere Girls and Fun Home.
I was shocked again … both were, in very different ways, outstanding … funny, sad, engaging, poignant, very worthwhile to have read and to recommend.
As a parent, grandparent and longtime pediatrician, I was impressed with how truly helpful at least these two books could be for some high-school students. Sad they won’t have access.
