Crafted by independent record store staff, Record Store Day began in 2008 as a legacy to the unique culture of the record store, and reflected the growing mid-2000s renewed interest in the classic format. Last year, 43.5 million vinyl records were sold, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. New vinyl record sales clipped CD sales last year for the first time in 20 years.

DeLand has two of its own record stores: Groovy Records, 212 N. Woodland Blvd., and Steve’s Downtown Music, 108 S. Woodland Blvd.

KEEPING VINYL ALIVE — Danny Bonilla, an employee at Groovy Records at 212 N. Woodland Blvd. in DeLand, who has been coming into the store since he was 12, was turned on to vinyl records by his folks. “He’s a walking encyclopedia,” laughed store owner Jerry Schafer. “I knew he would work at the store one day.”
