A FUN, ARTISTIC DAY — Stetson University students, kids from the Lacey Family Spring Hill Boys & Girls Club, Stetson University professor Asal Johnson and others celebrate the completion of a crosswalk mural near the intersection of West Mathis Street and South Adelle Avenue.

Stetson University sponsored a butterfly crosswalk mural at Mathis Street and Adelle Avenue in Spring Hill. Spearheaded by Stetson professor Asal Johnson, muralists Kelly and Courtney Canova, members of the Volusia/Flagler Boys & Girls Club, the Joyce Cusack Spring Hill Resource Center, and the Stetson community came together April 22, Earth Day, to paint the crosswalk, which depicts the life cycle of a monarch butterfly.

Johnson led the mural-making project as part of the “Planning for Healthy Cities” she teaches at Stetson.

“In this course, students are expected to do a community project that relates to the course content,” Johnson said. “Previous classes of the same course had surveyed the Spring Hill community about what they would like to see done in this corner.”

The crosswalk project was done in memory of Deacon Johnnie Blue, Johnson said, the man who raised Shilretha Dixon, director of the Dr. Cusack Resource Center.

“Dixon helped our class tremendously to navigate this project and organized the necessary workshops to receive feedback from the residents,” Johnson said.

Stetson Community Engagement funded the project.
