Editor, The Beacon:

I read with interest Mike Orr’s letter in the May 4-10 edition of The Beacon. He makes a logical, effective and relatively inexpensive way to solve a long-standing problem in Downtown DeLand. In addition to Mike’s letter, there was a second letter from Kitty Ostermann on the same topic. She advocated having a lighted “No Turn” sign.

Back when the City of DeLand created a new streetscape for Downtown DeLand, I had the privilege of being the executive director of the MainStreet DeLand Association, and I suggested the lighted sign concept to the then-city engineer. Sadly, my suggestion was not acted upon when it would have been less expensive to install.

This was more than 20 years ago, and the problem is still with us. I hope that there can be a cooperative effort between the City of DeLand and the State of Florida (they control those roads) to pick either of these suggested choices and act on them.
