Chris Levings and his wife, Jessica, who is a real estate agent with Kemp Realty Group, bought the 1.3-acre property of the Trinity United Methodist Church building at 306 W. Wisconsin Ave. for $1 million in 2022 with the goal of turning the first floor of the historic building into a community marketplace for vendors and artists, and converting upstairs space into 13 apartments.

At a groundbreaking ceremony May 10, Levings said that keeping the former church a community spot was important to the couple.

“It was important to us to celebrate and honor the tradition of community gathering,” Levings told a crowd of about 50 people.

So far, several vendors are confirmed for the spot, including a wine bar run by Downtown DeLand business owner Bill Budzinski.
