Taxation without representation?
BEACON PHOTO/AL EVERSON<br> THESE WOMEN SAY NO — Invited by the West Volusia Regional Chamber of Commerce to present the opposing side of the issue, Volusia Tax Reform Founder Margie Patchett, left, and former DeLand City Commissioner Maureen France, right, are making their own rounds calling upon voters to reject the local sales tax. At the Chamber’s April 16 breakfast gathering, Patchett said the county government has wasted money for roads, specifically gasoline taxes and impact fees. “It’s like — we’re out of money, so let’s get another credit card,” France agreed.

Editor, The Beacon:

Is property tax being used as a form of income tax? Yes! Do you feel represented in taxation? No!

Twelve thousand Volusia County property-tax certificates sold on May 31 represent 12,000 tragedies and broken dreams (swells close to 500,000 statewide).

The U.S. Constitution says elected reps are supposed to pursue the voters’ interests, not “decide what’s best for us without our consent.” In fact, each and every tax issue should be voted on by the voters or property owners in question.

The Revolutionary War of 1776 was sparked by the government (British) taxing patriots without any approval from those same patriots. Today, we have a system in which the voters are once again left out of the picture for taxes. This is not constitutional. This country belongs to legal citizens, not the government. They work for us, not the other way around.

FYI: Vermont property tax is based partially on income, so that citizens cannot be driven off their ancestral lands. Genius idea for Florida, too. Maybe it’s time for Florida to look for better ways and waste a lot less.

Please call your rep and demand lower property taxes, lower auto- and home-insurance rates; if you don’t, you are part of the problem.
