A timeless story of rebellion, resilience, the power of music, dancing, and having a little fun, takes center stage when the Athens Theatre Youth Academy presents its upcoming production of Footloose: Youth Edition at the Athens Theatre in DeLand. With shows at 7 p.m. Friday, June 30, and Saturday, July 1, along with a special matinee at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 2, get ready to let go, lose your blues, everybody cut Footloose!
Based on the original screenplay and lyrics by Dean Pitchford, this stage adaptation, featuring music by Tom Snow, is set to entertain and inspire. Footloose: Youth Edition tells the tale of Ren McCormack, a charismatic teenager from Chicago who, along with his mother, relocates to the conservative town of Bomont after his father’s abandonment. Ren’s arrival in Bomont sets off a series of events that expose the town’s strict ban on dancing, enforced by the Rev. Shaw Moore. Ren, determined to challenge this unjust rule, rallies his peers, including the spirited Ariel, the Reverend’s daughter, and the endearing Willard, to reclaim their freedom of expression through dance.
Under the direction of the Youth Academy director, Angelyn Rhode, along with Assistant Director Mark Leavitt and choreography by Lauren Stromak, the talented young performers have been diligently rehearsing to bring this iconic musical to life (in just two weeks’ time)! The role of Ren is being played by Xavier Soto-Colon, Isobel Cloudman will be portraying Ariel, Jordanny Hiciano will take on the role of the Rev. Shaw, and Robinson Rosenberg will play Willard. Moreover, set design, costuming, and all technical work are being done by the academy’s Design, Costuming, & Tech camp.
