The DeLand Police Department made another grim discovery this morning, Aug. 10. A body — the second in three days — was discovered behind the Goodwill thrift store at 1600 N. Woodland Blvd.
The first body was found the morning of Aug. 8 near the Dreka Theater at 112 E. New York Ave. in Downtown DeLand.
While the first dead person found was a male, the individual found behind the Goodwill store was a female, City of DeLand spokesman Chris Graham said.
“From what we could tell, the body had been there a few days,” Graham said of this morning’s discovery.
Both individuals are thought to have been homeless.
Graham said the Police Department doesn’t think either death is suspicious. The Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office will attempt to determine the cause of death in both cases, he said.
Neither individual is being identified, pending notification of their next of kin.
Graham said rumors are circulating in the community about several dead bodies being discovered, but these are the only two cases known to the DeLand Police Department.
Graham said he has asked the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office whether they are working any similar cases in the DeLand area; the Sheriff’s Office Activity Reports for the past several days show no such cases.
Any foul play suspected? Heat related?
Is there anyplace the homeless can go to cool off furnished by the community?
