FEMA to Conduct Nationwide Mobile Communications  Emergency Alert Test

Volusia County Emergency Management advises residents that the Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, will conduct a national test of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The national test will reach millions of mobile phones across the country via Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), as well as radio and television stations via the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The purpose is to assess the effectiveness of WEA and EAS in warning the public about emergencies on the national level.

All major U.S. wireless providers participate in WEA and will transmit the test message to their subscribers. A person should receive the test alert if their mobile phone is on and within range of an active cell tower from a participating provider. Wireless providers will transmit the alert for 30 minutes, but phones should only receive it once. The national test will help ensure WEA and EAS remain effective ways to alert the public about emergencies.
