In what is now an annual tradition, a local roofing company will give a new roof to a veteran homeowner in West Volusia.
Beery Roofing & Redesign LLC is once again offering to install, at no charge to the winner of its contest, a brand-new roof worth thousands of dollars for a qualifying current or former member of the U.S. armed forces living nearby. Sean Beery, co-founder of the company with his wife, Brenda, is a U.S. Army veteran. This is the third year the Beerys have staged the contest in local media and on Facebook.
“I’m a military veteran, and it’s my way of giving back,” Beery told The Beacon, when asked how he came upon the idea of offering a free roof.
The new roof, he noted, has a market value of $15,000-$20,000.
“This is for people who are in need of a roof, and they don’t have the money,” Beery said.
Last year’s contest, Beery said, drew “about 25 or 30 entries,” and he hopes for a greater turnout this year.
“We go through them [the entries submitted online], and we vet them to make sure they are in the military or were in the military. We get the top 10 or 12 and someone, maybe my daughter, will draw the winner,” he explained.
That random drawing of the winner’s name, Beery said, will be streamed live on Facebook.
The contest for the free roof is in effect through the end of October. The winner will be announced on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
To be eligible to win, the veteran must own and live in the home for which they are seeking the replacement roof. In addition, the entrant must be in need of the replacement roof.
In addition, the winner of the contest must agree to share his/her story.
