‘Enlightenment’

Mosaic Unitarian Universalist will talk about “Enlightenment” at its virtual Sunday, Oct. 8, service.

When you tell someone you’re Buddhist, do they ask, “So, are you enlightened yet?”

To be honest, it’s not an easy question to answer. The word enlightenment means different things in different contexts. Like other religions, Buddhism has a desired outcome, and that’s often expressed as enlightenment.

In this talk, Sensei Morris Doshin Sullivan will share his thoughts on what it means to be enlightened, if enlightenment is really possible, and if it’s only available to people who perform special religious practice.

Judy Raymond will lead the congregation through the service. Everyone is welcome!

‘Miracles of Deliverance’

First Church DeLand will begin the new series “When Pigs Fly” at the Sunday, Oct. 8, service. Pastor Mark Bitner will address “Miracles of Deliverance” in his sermon.

We all face overwhelming trials and challenges at times that we feel may break us. But we can conquer these issues by making every thought captive to Christ. “I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

You’re invited to the weekly Bible study on Thessalonians with Pastor Mark or the Acts Bible study in a small group. The studies will be at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11.

The popular Pumpkin Patch is open daily, the best place to buy the perfect pumpkin! Proceeds go toward youth activities.

Joy in believing

This Sunday, Oct. 8, Pastor Michael Bodger of First Presbyterian Church of DeLand will reflect on “Joy in Believing,” as declared by the Apostle Paul in Philippians 3:4-14. Listeners will hear that Paul now regards as rubbish all the earthly trappings he held dear before he came to understand the reality and value of Christ Jesus, saying, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus!”

On the road to Damascus, Paul had realized that he must enter into the right relationship with the Living God, not from anything he himself did, but by having faith, believing in Christ. Thus, we moderns can comprehend that — as did Paul — we must, “rejoice in Christ and Christ alone!”

On Friday, Oct. 6, the broad family fun of bingo begins at 7 p.m., and offers a friendly competition, as well as clever prizes, refreshments and fellowship, until 8:30 p.m. Bring your friends, and enjoy a free night of fun for all ages!

The Farm Share Food Drive kicks off its first fall distribution at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the pavilion in the First Pres parking lot. Volunteers will load your car with boxes of fresh and nonperishable foods as you drive in the clearly directed route. Each box will contain food to supply a family of four for a week.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, at 10:30 a.m., the Presbyterian Women’s “Dedication of the Thanks Offering” brunch and meeting will engage attendees in its speaker and program of thoughtful sharing. Reserve your spot for only $5 on the church website.

Discerning God’s will for your life

On Sunday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m., Chaplain Lewis Long III will present “The Will of God and Discerning God’s Will for Your Life” at Collective Church in DeLand.

The presentation will cover the intentional will of God and God’s ideal plan for us; the circumstantial will of God and God’s plan within certain circumstances; and the ultimate will of God and God’s final realization of His purposes.

Attendees can ponder the questions: Where do I go from here? Is there the freedom to make mistakes? Should I discern God’s will or get His sanction for my own? And have I got the courage to do God’s will when I discern it?

There will be a discussion following the presentation.

Collective Church meets at First Unitarian Universalist Church.
