Pat Ulicny Hoback is the Deltona Art Club’s Artist of the Month for October. Her framed glass art titled Crested Wave is hanging in the entrance to Deltona City Hall and will be on display for the entire month.
Hoback was born in Ohio, but grew up in Fort Lauderdale, and she supplied me with such a great review of her life that I will let her tell her story in her own words:
“I attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, where I received a degree in interior design. After working for a large local design firm in the area designing big-box retail, such as Lord & Taylor and Macy’s, I was asked by the Art Institute to develop a store-planning class.
“I taught interior design and store planning for several years before the school transferred me to their campus in Atlanta to become director of the interior-design department. I was exposed to various art forms and tried several until settling on stained glass, with photography coming in a close second.
“After leaving teaching, I partnered with another designer to form Designworks Retail Consulting Group, where we designed golf country clubs and small retail spaces across the country, while continuing to teach residential design at Chattahoochee Tech.
“I have been doing stained glass for several years and work out of my home and at Holidaze Art Glass on North Florida Avenue in DeLand, where I also sell my art pieces. After spending 30 years in the design industry, it only made sense to keep my fingers in something I enjoy.
“My style is a variety of local Florida themes to some abstract, which I tend to keep, because I use my crazy scrap colors to build different styles and themes. I share my pieces with those who appreciate this art form and enjoy its style.
“I joined the Deltona Art Club because I enjoy being around like-minded and talented artists who support everyone in their art form. The sharing of the different art styles exposes all members to the beautiful art of all those who come to admire it.”
The Deltona Art Club meets at 9:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month September through May in the Scrub Jay Room at the Deltona Regional Library, 2150 Eustace Ave.
We have open art studio time noon-3 p.m. every Thursday at the Chisholm Community Center, 520 S. Clara Ave. in DeLand. At the same location, every Friday, there is a painting class with a professional art teacher. The cost of each class is $25, and nonmembers are welcome at the Thursday session and the class on Friday.
We welcome more local artists to our meetings and to join our club. Check us out at deltonaartclub@gmail.com, and see us on our Facebook page.
