The Florida Department of Education has released the 2022-23 school and district grades. Volusia County Schools maintained a district grade of B, with 54 percent of schools earning an A or B rating. There were no schools receiving a grade of D or F.

Overall, VCS grades for traditional schools are as follows: A, 17 schools; B, 20 schools; C, 29 schools; D and F, 0 schools; and I, two schools.

This is the first year that school and district grades were calculated using the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) Progress Monitoring and Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (BEST) End-of-Course assessment results.

A school’s grade is calculated based on achievement in reading, math, science and social studies, as well as acceleration and graduation rates, according to guidelines provided by the Department of Education.

Any school grade that has been withheld by the state is designated as incomplete – I. A school grade could be withheld if less than 95 percent of the eligible students participated in testing.

Key highlights for Volusia County are that a total of 25 schools increased their school grade by one or more letter rankings from the 2021-22 to the 2022-23 school year. The number of A schools more than doubled, from seven schools earning an A in 2021-22 to 18 schools earning an A in 2022-23. The number of schools earning an A or B grade this year increased from 31 to 37 schools.

Coronado Beach Elementary in New Smyrna Beach received the highest score of all elementary schools in Central Florida and was the third-highest of all elementary schools in the entire state, receiving 93 percent of possible points.

Pride Elementary in Deltona improved two letter grades from a D to a B.

No elementary or middle school declined a letter grade from 2021-22 to 2022-23.

With the Standard Response Protocol, the term “evacuate” is used. Students have been trained to leave stuff behind if required to. If possible, they are to bring their phone and follow instructions.

Adults and staff are trained to bring roll sheets and go bags with them unless instructed not to, dependent on the reason for evacuation; to lead students to an evacuation location; and to account for students and adults and report injuries or problems using the red card/green card method.

Monday, Dec. 18, marked the end of the second grading period.
